As we begin our secular new year, many of us consider resolutions to improve ourselves during the year to come. There are a number of famous quotes upon which I enjoy reflecting from time to time. Since I am a huge fan of Broadway musicals, I thought I would share with you some quotes found in the script or lyrics of some of these shows. Just for fun, see if you can identify the original source of the quote, and the show where the texts also can be found. Those of you who reply to me (cantor@kehillatchaim.org) with the correct answers by January 14, 2011 will get your names printed in next month’s Kol Kehillah. When you respond, please let me know whether or not you needed to do any research. Also, if you are not a member of TKC, please let me know in which city you reside.
Better yet, send me more examples, and try to stump me.
Here we go:
1) “What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how
infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and
admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like
a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals…”
3) "Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence."
4) “Truth is beauty”
5) “You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays”
6) “Where I'm from, we believe all sorts of things that aren't true. We call it history:
A man's called a traitor – Or liberator.
A rich man's a thief – Or philanthropist.
Is one a crusader? – Or ruthless invader?
It's all in which label is able to persist.”
There are precious few at ease with moral ambiguities;
So we act as though they don't exist!”
7) Children, I guess, must get their own way the minute that you say “No!”
Have fun! Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2011!
