What Chanukah Really Means

Chanukah is often described as the “Festival of Lights,” but its deeper meaning can sometimes get lost behind familiar rituals and stories. This year, I wanted to step back and ask a simple question: what does Chanukah really celebrate?
In the video below, I explore Chanukah through classical Jewish sources, focusing on Jewish identity, cultural encounter, and the challenge of remaining rooted and visible in a broader world. Rather than comparing Chanukah to other holidays, this teaching tries to understand the holiday on its own terms: as a story about resilience, pride, and the courage to live fully as Jews.
Chanukah reminds us that Jewish life has always involved engaging with the world around us, learning from it, contributing to it, and at times pushing back when that world demands we give up who we are. The miracle of the oil, as the rabbis tell it, becomes a symbol of that enduring Jewish presence.
My hope is that this teaching adds depth and meaning to your Chanukah this year. I’d love to hear what part of the Chanukah story resonates most with you.
